Who the heck thought THAT was a good idea

There are things that drive me nuts about superparenting. Are there things that happen in your parenting life that you think ” are they NUTS?” or “who thought this up?”.
I heard recently of a fifth grade class whose celebration (of making it through fifth grade, big huge acheivement not) was a trip to NYC, a broadway show and lunch in some tourist trap. This was not the only 5th grade celebration they had either. The total cost to the parents for the celebrations was close to 1K. Am I the only one who thinks this is ridiculously excessive?
What are the things that drive you nuts. Here are some of mine.

Major offence: Party treat bags- bits of nonsense plastic junk, cheap candy and choking hazards. Who the heck needs them? Who thought that was a good idea? The owner of a dollar store?
Bouquets for a recital- she’s not a prima ballerina, it’s not the West End. It just cost you a chunk of change to give her this cellophane parcel. Put it in her college fund!
Easter baskets – see party treat bags…increase scale.

Your pet hates? What would you love to say to parents or the PTA? Do you hate the sugar festival celebrations at every minor occassion at school? Do you think junior deserves a limo to the last day of elementary school? Do you think the lunatics are running the asylum?

  1. I agree with everything you said… except one. Easter baskets? How can you say those are a waste? I mean, okay, maybe they are, but man we looked forward to our Easter baskets! And they were filled with THE BEST candy. Not like we needed the junk food, but… still… it was awesome. (Yeah, I see your point.)

  2. Pre-kindergarten graduations. Any graduation, in fact, other than high school or university. My neice just had her Pre-K graduation, at no small expense.

  3. Nnnnnn gahhhhh Bossy hates these things too. Waste waste waste.

  4. I feel I would have beent he mean parent and said no way. Celebrate with a party, I’m not throwing down 1K. 5th grade woopty do. (Obviously my children are deprived)

  5. How about birthday parties for 1-year old babies especially if almost all of the attendees are adults…

  6. Oh yeah, party bags are so expensive once you get started!

  7. Little present for you over at WRH later today!

    heh heh.
